Temple University Hospital, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Temple University Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery  is a 4 year accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program.  Our program is expertly designed to produce highly qualified surgeons who are able to pursue any post-graduate goals they may have. Our program is based through Temple University Hospital and is not associated with any dental school.

Training Sites

Temple University Hospital (Level I Trauma Center)

Inpatient

Number of service beds (including ICU): 564

Ambulatory Sites at TUH

Residents will participate in outpatient ambulatory experiences in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery throughout their residency program at TUH Commonwealth Campus. Autonomy in outpatient care will be achieved under the supervision of faculty.

Emergency Room at Temple University

PGY 1-4 residents provide emergency care. The TUH resident on-call provides coverage during 24 hours.

Maxillofacial Trauma call is divided between Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ENT), rotating every week. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery covers call 1-2 weeks per month. 


Cooper University Hospital (Level I Trauma Center)

Residents rotate at Cooper University Hospital in their third and fourth year of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery training (PGY-3, PGY-4). 4 months of the PGY-3 is spent under the service of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ENT). During the resident’s chief year (PGY-4), 8 months will be spent on service as the chief resident for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Time is divided equally between office hours and operating room experience.  


St. Christopher's Hospital for Children 

Residents rotate at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in their second year of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery serving as a Pediatric Anesthesiology Resident for the duration of 1 month (PGY 2). 


Crozer-Chester Medical Center (Level II Trauma Center)

Crozer-Chester Medical Center is a 300-bed facility in Philadelphia equipped with a comprehensive emergency department, trauma center, and burn treatment center. During this rotation, residents will act as chief resident for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and cover only maxillofacial trauma.


Capital Health System, Hopewell and Regional Medical Center (Level II Trauma Center)

Capital Health System, Hopewell and Regional Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center located in Pennington, New Jersey. Residents will rotate during their second year of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery training (PGY-2), acting as the first call resident and operating one on one with an attending surgeon.  

Resources

Lewis Katz School of Medicine of Temple University

Residents will have access to all resources at Lewis Katz School of Medicine of Temple University, Ginsburg Health Sciences library. The Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Ginsburg Health Library carries all major Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery journals and is well stocked with general Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery texts.


Residents will have access to a dedicated conference room which are used for morning rounds at Temple University Hospital. Additionally, residents will have access to the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery on-call room with additional textbook references and online databases for biomedical literature.


All residents will be given OMS reference guide from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.


Temple University Hospital, Commonwealth Campus

The residents have dedicated space in our Temple University Hospital, Commonwealth campus office where they have access to personal libraries of faculty, (over 300 volumes) of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery texts and major journals in addition to a resident drive that contains major Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery eBooks, video and PowerPoint lectures, OMSITE resources, and journals.

  The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) One-Year Preliminary Internship is for a dental school graduate. Interns will assist in outpatient clinics and perform simple dentoalveolar surgical procedures and gain inpatient hospital and on-call experience with maxillofacial trauma.. This is a non-categorical position.
